In The Twelve Days of Christmas, the Two Turtle Doves represent the Old and New Testaments. The story describes the song as a concealed way to teach English Catholics the foundations of their faith when it was prohibited. Many older meanings have faded, leaving a cheerful carol that is now a holiday standard.
