Description

The custom of hanging stockings beside the fireplace grew popular during the 1800s. A legend tells of St. Nicholas dropping bags of gold through a chimney into stockings that three poor sisters had left by the fire to dry; the sisters had no dowries. Children still hang stockings today in anticipation of a Christmas surprise.
