Christmas lighting guide

Choose the right light style, color and power system for the place you want to decorate.

Start with the location

Decide whether the lights will be used on an indoor tree, across a window, around a mantel or outdoors. Check the location rating of the lights, transformer, controller and connectors. An outdoor-rated strand does not automatically make every accessory weatherproof.

Choose a light style

String lights suit wrapping and tracing. Cluster lights group bulbs closely for a fuller look. Curtain lights create a backdrop of hanging strands. Icicle lights use drops of different lengths, while festoon lights have larger, more defined bulbs.

Compare illuminated length and lead length

The illuminated length is the part carrying the lights. The lead length runs from the power supply to the first light. Measure both the display and the route to power, allowing for turns and a relaxed drape. Do not pull cables tight to make them reach.

Match the color and controls

Warm white gives a softer tone; bright white appears crisper. Multicolor and color-changing products differ in their modes and controls. Check the selected option for static or animated effects, timers, dimming and any app requirements.

Check compatibility before connecting

Match the stated voltage, connector, power supply and product range. A similar-looking plug is not proof of compatibility. Do not mix systems or exceed the manufacturer’s limits for the number of strands, total length or power load.

Check whether the product is a complete starter kit or an extension that needs a separately purchased power supply. Ask us about a specific SKU if the included parts are unclear.

Install and store carefully

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep cables clear of pinching points and use suitable supports. Inspect the lights before installation. Disconnect power before handling connections or storing the display, and let the product dry fully before packing it away.
